About the test

What does an echocardiogram show?

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart. Sound waves create live, moving images, so your doctor can see how your heart muscle and valves work while your heart beats.

You lie on a bed while the sonographer moves a small probe with gel over your chest. There are no needles and no radiation.

Ask a question
Do I need a referral?

Yes. A referral from your GP or specialist is needed for a Medicare rebate, and it tells us exactly which test your doctor wants.

Does an echocardiogram hurt?

No. You may feel some pressure from the probe, and the gel can feel cool. Tell the sonographer if you are uncomfortable at any time.

How long will I be there?

Plan for about an hour. The scan takes 30–45 minutes, plus a few minutes to check in and change.

Who gets my results?

A cardiologist sends the report to the doctor who referred you. Make a follow-up appointment with that doctor to go through the results.

Can a family member come with me?

Yes. A family member, carer or interpreter is welcome. Let us know in the form if you need extra help on the day.
